The Emergency Medical Retrieval Service - NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde were commissioned by the Scottish Government Health Department to undertake an 18 month pilot of an emergency medical retrieval service (EMRS) serving all remote and rural health care facilities in the West of Scotland. The need for a rural Scottish EMRS was identified in the Delivering for Health plan for health care in Scotland. Plans for a national EMRS were detailed in a report by the EMRS subgroup of the remote and rural steering group and submitted to the SGHD. This followed a localised 3 year EMRS trial in Argyll and Bute. EMRS has the following aims: • Creation of an integrated and well governed system of rural emergency care • Augmentation of rural healthcare practitioner training in emergency care and transfer • Provision of on-line expert advice on patient management and transfer • Rapid on site provision of emergency and critical care interventions • Safe transfer directly to definitive care The WoS EMRS pilot has the following objectives: • Provision of patient retrieval, training and on-line advice • Assessment of the need for an EMRS to support rural health care • Assessment of the feasibility of a national EMRS provision from one or two centres • Assessment of the added values of the service including rural health care recruitment, education, reduction in air transfers • Assessment of EMRS potential to integrate with emerging models of rural health care.

The Remote and Rural Care eLibrary - provides knowledge support for healthcare staff across Scotland working in the remote and rural environment.

The Sandpiper Trust - Providing Rural GPs in Scotland with emergency medical equipment and specialist training. The Sandpiper Trust, a Scottish Charity, was set up in memory of Sandy Dickson by his parents, family and friends. The primary aim of the Trust is to ensure that all rural GPs and nurses especially those on non-doctor islands or remote communities in Scotland are provided with essential emergency medical equipment and resources once they have undergone specialist training courses and gained certification from BASICS SCOTLAND, (The British Association for Immediate Care).

The Scottish Ambulance Service - The Scottish Ambulance Service serves all of Scotland and is a Special Health Board funded directly by the Health Department of the Scottish Executive. We are the frontline of the NHS in Scotland and cover the largest geographic area of any ambulance service in the UK. We have two main functions - the provision of an Accident and Emergency service to respond to 999 calls and the Patient Transport Service, which performs and essential role in taking patients to and from their hospital appointments.
